While there are many directions general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott could go with the first of the team’s ten draft picks White Ramon Humber Jerseys , there are two franchises with strong ties to the Bills that have been rumored to be interested in trading up in the first round. In a story written by Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated and The Monday Morning Quarterback, Breer said he’s heard from sources that the Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers are the two teams he’s heard most often associated with trading up in the draft. The Bills have ties to both organizations, which could pave the way for a draft-day trade with either Houston or Carolina. Brian Gaine, the current general manager of the Texans, previously served as vice president of player personnel for the Bills in 2017 before being recruited to take over as GM in January of 2018. And as every Bills fan knows by now Ramon Humber Jerseys 2019 , the Bills-Panthers connection runs deep. McDermott was the Panthers’ defensive coordinator from 2011-2016, orchestrating a top-ten defense every year from 2012-2015. Beane spent his entire career in Carolina before becoming the general manager of the Bills in May 2017. From 2008-2014, Beane served as the Panthers’ director of football operations before he was promoted to assistant GM for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Here’s what Breer had to say about the trade rumors involving the Panthers and Texans: “Carolina (No. 16) and Houston (No. 23) wouldn’t be going up for quarterbacks. In all likelihood, it’d be a move to get one of the top three tackles. Each has been very present in that market on the scouting trail over the last three months, and the dropoff from the first cluster (Alabama’s Jonah Williams White Jerry Hughes Jerseys , Florida’s Jawaan Taylor, Washington State’s Andre Dillard) to the second (Alabama State’s Tytus Howard, Ole Miss’ Greg Little) leaves both teams in a bit of a no man’s land, drafting too low for the former and too high for the latter. So both could move up or, failing that Jerry Hughes Jerseys 2019 , move down,” Breer said.Bills Links, 10/10: McCoy trade rumors, Anderson signing dominate the headlines It was a busy day for the Buffalo Bills as there was plenty of news around One Bills Drive.  way offenses in the NFL are described by analysts. Media members have a tendency to tell you about how NFL offenses were decades ago rather than accurately portray what is happening in today’s NFL with their West Coast Offense , Air Coryell, and Erhardt-Perkins labels. The Jets’ hiring of Gregg Williams has served as a reminder that this is not limited to offense. Analysis of defense is also weighed down by outdated descriptions.Much time and attention has been provided to the Jets changing from the 3-4 system of Eric Mangini, Rex Ryan, and Todd Bowles to the 4-3 system of Gregg Williams. But it isn’t quite that simple. In the modern NFL, these labels have become largely obsolete.Perhaps the biggest issue is that today’s NFL doesn’t make it practical to run a 4-3 or a 3-4 as a base defense. By definition a 4-3 defense has 4 defensive linemen, 3 linebackers, and 4 defensive backs. A 3-4 defense has 3 defensive linemen Trenton Cannon Jersey , 4 linebackers, and 4 defensive backs. The rise of the modern passing game has greatly reduced use of these personnel packages on defense. When offenses regularly put 3 or more receivers on the field, defenses cannot play only 4 defensive backs. At least 5 defensive backs are necessary on most plays, which means removing at least 1 lineman or linebacker. That means the defense becomes something other than a 4-3 or a 3-4.Consider this.Over the last two seasons Vance Joseph’s Broncos had their “base” package with 4 defensive backs on the field more than any team in the league, and they still used it less than half the time. But even if we assume this isn’t true, there are other ways these rigid labels no longer work.Beyond the way personnel groupings are dictating things, offenses have become more and more sophisticated over time. Every defensive playcall has weaknesses. If you are running the same thing over and over on defense Womens Jordan Jenkins Jersey , modern offenses will know exactly how to attack it and eat you alive. As a result, virtually every defense in today’s NFL has to mix up its defensive looks over the course of a game. That includes its fronts. Let’s take a look at some of the fronts from the Week 3 game between the Jets and Browns. We can compare “3-4 Todd” Bowles and “4-3 Gregg” Williams. We will start with some of the looks the Jets showed. In this expertly drawn box we can see “3-4 Todd” went with a 3 defensive lineman look. No shock there. But then this expertly drawn box shows “3-4” Todd with a 4 defensive lineman front. Things get back to normal in this expertly drawn box as the defense of “3-4 Todd” has 3 linemen. But yet again “3-4 Todd” had 4 defensive linemen in this expertly drawn box.Now let’s switch to “4-3 Gregg.” This expertly drawn box shows the Browns with 4 defensive linemen. But then this expertly drawn box shows “4-3 Gregg” with only 3 defensive linemen.Things get back to normal with “4-3 Gregg” in this expertly drawn box as the Browns have 4 defensive linemen. But then “4-3 Gregg” only has 3 defensive linemen in this expertly drawn box.By the way, every single one of those shots came in the first quarter of the game the Jets and the Browns played. Hopefully they show how the fuss between 4-3 and 3-4 is vastly overrated in today’s NFL.There was a day where clear distinctions existed between 3-4 and 4-3 defenses. Many 3-4 scheme in the past asked their linemen to cover 2 gaps (spaces between offensive linemen). The job of these linemen wasn’t penetrating. It was really to tie up blockers so that linebackers were free to make plays. One of the advantages of the scheme came from the standard 4 man pass rush. In addition to the 3 linemen, the fourth pass rusher could be any of the linebackers. The offense had no idea which one it would be before the snap.A team that ran a 4-3 in the past might assign each lineman a single gap and ask the other gaps to be taken by linebackers (and/or safeties). The linemen could penetrate and make plays. While it was usually more predictable, it gave the chance for big, elite athletes to make more impact plays since their job was to get into the backfield instead of tie up blockers. There was a point in time when few teams ran a 3-4, which arguably gave those teams an advantage.Star caliber defensive linemen who consistently penetrate and make impact plays are hard to find. Linemen who are strong enough to fill two gaps and hold up at the point of attack aren’t as difficult to acquire. Furthermore , with most of the teams in the league running a 4-3 at that point, these stout gap fillers weren’t useful to most of the league and thus could be obtained cheaply. The same goes for pass rushing 3-4 outside linebackers. These tended to be athletes who weren’t big enough to hold up as 4-3 defensive ends. With most of the league running the 4-3, these guys weren’t in demand, but they fit the 3-4 well. The classic 2 gapping 3-4 defense has largely gone out of style. While some teams have a single linemen or even a couple 2 gap, you’d be hard-pressed to find a team that asks all of its linemen to do so for most of the game. I would argue that the rise of the modern passing offense again has something to do with it. As the passing game has continued to grow in importance, defenses have put more of a priority on rushing the passer, which requires more penetration through a single gap and puts less of a premium holding the point of attack to contain a pair of gaps.A lot of looks that are nominally 3-4 in today’s NFL have responsibilities that resemble a classic 4-3.This isn’t entirely new either. Wade Phillips has run his defense like this for decades. So in many ways the only functional difference between a 3-4 and 4-3 is whether an edge guy has his hand on the ground. If either edge guy in the picture below just got into a 3 point stance Robby Anderson Jersey , this would be a 4-3 look. Since neither does, it’s a 3-4 look. But there really isn’t any difference otherwise. In conclusion, the whole 4-3 vs. 3-4 thing is overblown. I keep seeing people talk about scheme fits. For example, I see discussion about whether a pass rusher is an option for a 4-3 team because he projects more as a 3-4 outside linebacker. This is flawed thinking. In today’s NFL quality edge rushers are an extremely valuable commodity. It shouldn’t matter whether that edge guy is more comfortable standing up as a linebacker or putting his hand on the ground as a defensive end. Your team should be able to accommodate him. When we talk about scheme, we should think about blitz rates, utilization of man vs. zone, most common coverage shells Womens Kelvin Beachum Jersey , and the roles that need to be filled within the system.4-3 and 3-4 have become largely obsolete labels. Linebacker C.J. Mosley is one of three players on our list of the top 100 free agents who has not agreed to a deal with a new team or been franchise tagged by his current team and the Ravens are reportedly working to keep him from leaving Baltimore.Jeff Zrebiec of reports that the Ravens have “sweetened” their offer to Mosley over the course of the day. They may need more sugar in order to bring it home, though.Zrebiec reports that the offer still lags behind what other teams have put on the table. The report specifically names the Jets as a team that has made a higher bid for Mosley and leaves open the possibility that other teams are also topping Baltimore’s latest offer.Earlier reports on Monday named Washington, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia as other interested parties.

Saquon Barkley, Evan Engram and Odell Beckham, Jr. make up one of the most explosive offensive threesomes in the NFL. The Cowboys answer with young quarterback Dak Prescott White Joe Klecko Jerseys , looking to regain the magic of his rookie season. Prescott’s main weapon on offense is standout running back Ezekiel Elliott. The Cowboys have few other weapons at the skill positions, but they still have a good offensive line to help move the football.  negotiations Phillip Gaines Jerseys 2019 , according to Phillips himself. He spoke with reporters in an interview that was published by The Buffalo News as part of locker clean-out day on Monday.“We’ve already been in negotiations,” Phillips said. “We’ve been keeping it under wraps.”The Buffalo Bills claimed Phillips after the Miami Dolphins waived him on October 3rd. Over the remaining 12 games of the season, Phillips was an active backup defensive tackle each week, averaging 36 percent of snaps per game. He recorded 19 tackles (two for loss), three passes defended, and a fumble recovery during that stretch. The Buffalo Bills have an opening at defensive tackle with Kyle Williams retiring. Star Lotulelei is locked in as the starting nose tackle, and rookie Harrison Phillips handled a backup role for both tackle positions. They’re the only returning players.Phillips noted that “the Bills are looking for a new 3-technique White Marshall Newhouse Jerseys , and I think I’m the best candidate.” Standing 6’6” and 341 pounds, Phillips doesn’t look like a typical three technique defensive tackle. With only 5.5 sacks in his first four seasons, he didn’t have the expected production for the position either. But his strength and hot motor would make him an effective rotational player, similar to the rookie Phillips, who could play anywhere between the offensive tackles as the situation required.Phillips is one of nine unrestricted free agents who finished the year on the Buffalo Bills roster. As the 2019 off-season circuit approaches, the Buffalo Bills have a mission: to bolster their play in the trenches and build up a playoff roster. Longtime defensive tackle Kyle Williams, who tallied five sacks in 2018 Marshall Newhouse Jerseys 2019 , is retiring. The only other defensive tackles under contract are Star Lotulelei and Harrison Phillips, who combined for zero sacks last year. On the offensive side, essentially the entire unit could see a makeover under newly-signed coach Bobby Johnson. That’s the mentality SB Nation’s Dan Kadar used when drafting for the Bills in his latest mock draft. Choosing between a few different options, Kadar ultimately went with the best player available in Ed Oliver.Dan’s take:Kadar’s not wrong—though offensive line is the more glaring need—a pass rushing three technique defensive tackle is right up there. Factor in that the 2019 draft is laden with talented defensive linemen, and it would be sensible to make such a selection—especially if free agency helps the Bills plug some holes in the roster.Oliver would be just what the doctor ordered to replace Williams. He’s ludicrously athletic, and has the anchor of a tree trunk despite weighing closer to 280 pounds. He’d give the team a Geno Atkins-esque disrupter in the middle. If a player with his caliber of talent is on the board with the ninth overall pick, Buffalo could afford waiting another day to add some offensive pieces for Josh Allen and Brian Daboll. Cody Ford is a valid option White Trent Murphy Jerseys , but he’s a right tackle that some scouts would rather see playing guard at the next level. That’s hard to justify in the top ten picks. Jeffery Simmons is another talented defensive lineman, with more prototypical size at 6’4” 300 pounds. He managed an impressive 29.0 tackles for loss over the past two seasons, but an incident in his history where Simmons hit a woman during an argument may remove him from Buffalo’s draft board entirely.

possession touchdown of the season. They did it in impressive fashion.Darius Jennings got Tennessee started off right White Eric Rowe Jerseys , with a 58-yard kickoff return to the New England 40. It took seven plays for the Titans to to the rest of the way.Marcus Mariota completed 2 of 3 passes for 28 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown toss to tight end Jonnu Smith. Smith had no touchdowns this season until Monday night and he now has two in six days.Dion Lewis had four carries for 12 yards against his former team on the first drive. The Patriots answered with a field goal after Josh Gordon dropped a third-down pass. Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 52-yard field goal with 9:19 remaining in the first quarter.Tom Brady went 3-for-6 for 41 yards. Gordon caught two passes for 44 yards, and James White lost 3 yards on his lone catch. The Patriots did not attempt a rush on their first drive. ATLANTA (AP) — Julian Edelman is certainly a compelling story.A diminutive guy with a bushy beard, picked in the final round of the draft, defying the odds to become one of the NFL’s top receivers. And, now, a Super Bowl MVP.But let’s not forget one other fairly important element to this story:He cheated.Edelman was honored Monday for his 10-catch, 141-yard performance the previous night, the only discernable bright spot offensively in a dreary Super Bowl won by the New England Patriots. Commissioner Roger Goodell — the same guy who said with a straight face five days earlier that Colin Kaepernick’s two-years-and-counting banishment from the league for protesting social injustice was merely a football decision made independently by 32 franchises — was all smiles as he handed Edelman his silver, football-shaped prize known as the Pete Rozelle Trophy.“Well deserved. Extraordinary performance, and not just last night, but his performance in postseason has been simply off the charts Eric Rowe Jerseys 2019 ,” Goodell said. “Julian, congratulations. Come on up and get your trophy.”There was no mention of Edelman being suspended for the first four games of the season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. In his brief opening remarks, the receiver talked of the “ups and downs” the Patriots had been through, what he called “just the ebbs and flows of the season.”Then came the first question.“You missed last year (with a torn ACL), you come back this year and have a four-game suspension, talk about fighting back through adversity and coming out on the other end as the Super Bowl MVP,” the reporter said, a tone of admiration In his voice. “What did that mean to you, through all the work that you put in?”Coming off a serious knee injury, there’s no doubt Edelman worked extremely hard to make it back at age 32, when there was plenty of skepticism that he’d ever be as effective as he was before. But it’s also worth noting that Edelman gave his rehab an illicit boost by taking a PED, undoubtedly looking to improve the odds of returning to the field on the downside of his career.Edelman apologized for his mistake White LaAdrian Waddle Jerseys , expressed the usual confusion that all cheaters rely on when they’re caught, but never revealed the substance in question. He served the suspension and returned to put up roughly the same prorated numbers as he did in 2016, before his injury, catching 74 passes for 850 yards and six touchdowns over the final 12 games of the regular season. He was even better in the playoffs.Edelman hauled in nine catches for 151 yards in a divisional-round victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. He had seven receptions for 96 yards in the thrilling overtime triumph at Kansas City in the AFC championship game. Finally, he provided an offensive spark in the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever, helping the Patriots knock off the Los Angeles Rams 13-3.Now, if Edelman was a Major League Baseball player or an Olympic athlete, he probably wouldn’t have had a chance to shine on the big stage. The MLB’s doping policy has a provision that prevents anyone who tests positive from taking part in the postseason that year, even if they’ve already served their full penalty. The extra sanction was added in 2014 after All-Stars Jhonny Peralta and Nelson Cruz returned from doping suspensions in time to participate in the playoffs, which rightfully angered other players. The World Anti-Doping Agency went down the same path, doubling the potential penalty for a first-time doping offender from two to four years, a way of ensuring that those blatantly caught cheating would have to miss the next Olympics. But the NFL has never shown it’s all that serious about stamping out doping LaAdrian Waddle Jerseys 2019 , nor has the players union. At the very least, those who test positive for PEDs should face an eight-game suspension — half the regular season — and a postseason ban. Stricter testing rules, in line with international standards, should also be imposed, perhaps in tandem with relaxed restrictions on pot use and approval of medical marijuana to help deal with the chronic pain so many current and former players must endure. Those of us in the media should also take a hard look at whether there are racial overtones to the way we look at those who violate the rules.Edelman faced little real criticism over his doping violation, perhaps because he’s usually gushed over with that convenient stereotype applied to so many white players: undersized, not as talented as those around him, someone who makes up for it with his intelligence and work ethic. There are undoubtedly fans, and perhaps even members of the media, who feel Edelman was merely showing just how dedicated he is to the game by doing whatever it took to get back on the field after a serious injury. He was rightly lauded for his accomplishments — but let’s not forget that other thing. He cheated.

collection of Lou Gehrig memorabilia both times she asked him to pick something out as a Father’s Day gift.It was a hat worn by the New York Yankees slugger and a baseball signed by fellow Hall of Famers Ty Cobb Aaron Sanchez Jersey , Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker and Eddie Collins.“I could never wear the hat because my head was too big,” the Connecticut resident said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. “The baseball to me is historic. I know statistically those four batters were four of the top 20 batters in the history of baseball.”The hat and ball are among items Ellis and his wife, Jill, received from Jill’s mother, Laurel Steigler, in 1998. The collection, which includes various photographs, letters and signed documents, and baseballs, is now available as part of Heritage Auctions’ latest offering.Gehrig batted .340 with 493 home runs and 1,995 RBIs over his 17 years with the New York Yankees, helping the team win six World Series titles. He played in 2,130 consecutive games — a record that stood until Baltimore’s Cal Ripken Jr. broke it 1995. Gehrig retired in 1939 because amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), later called Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame the same year and died in 1941.Steigler originally inherited the items from Lou Gehrig’s mother, Christina. Steigler and her husband, George, were longtime friends with Christina Gehrig when she and her husband, Heinrich, lived in the New York suburb of Mamaroneck.Sometime after Heinrich Gehrig died in 1946, Christina went to live with the Steiglers in Milford, Connecticut. Christina Gehrig stayed with them for several years until they helped her get her own place in Milford. When she died in 1954, she left part of the collection of her son’s memorabilia in her will to the Steiglers.Bob Ellis married Jill in 1964 , and got the ball and hat from his mother-in-law over the years. The rest of the items were kept in a safe in the Steiglers’ house. After George Steigler died, Jill encouraged her mother to decide what she ultimately wanted to do with the collection. So, in 1998, Laurel Steigler divided the items between Jill and brother Kenny, who sold what he received in 2001, according to Bob Ellis. The rest remained in Laurel Steigler’s safe until she died in 2014, when Ellis said the safe was transferred to his house. The items remained untouched until two years ago. Ellis then came across letters, signed checks, a copy of a 1930 speech, a signed car registration and all the photographs.“That’s when we were like, wow, look at all this stuff that was available that we never paid attention to,” Ellis said.Since his son and daughter weren’t interested in the items, Ellis thought about selling the collection. When he attended a meeting of baseball enthusiasts in Derby, Connecticut, called the Silver Sluggers last August, Ellis said group host Rich Marazzi — a rules consultant for major league teams — encouraged him to contact Heritage Auctions. The following month, Ellis and his son, Scott, met with Heritage representatives in New York to determine which items had value. The Gehrig hat was certified by Mears, one of the leading memorabilia authentication companies, and estimated to be worth at least $200,000.“It’s the finest condition Gehrig cap that’s ever come to market Russell Martin Jersey ,” said Chris Ivy, Heritage’s director of sports auctions. “The condition on it is just astounding. It pretty much looks exactly like it did when Gehrig wore it in the ’30s.”Ellis said the hat is big hit whenever shown at group meetings.“I offered to let people take a picture with the hat on and that absolutely was a highlight for those people.” he said. “Most of which were older people and they knew the legacy of Gehrig. A couple people told me that to take that picture to their senior citizen group the next week was the thrill of a lifetime.”The ball signed by the four Hall of Famers was valued by Heritage at $20,000, and the photographs range from $100 to at least $4,000.Ellis said he and his wife plan to give some of the money from the items to their son, daughter and three grandchildren.“There’s no intention for us to go and take crazy trips,” he said. FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Alex Cora guided the Boston Red Sox to a franchise-record 108 wins and a World Series victory last season, and then he reported to his second spring training as a major league manager as if nothing had changed.Still just 43, Cora has a chance to be the first Red Sox manager to win back-to-back championships in more than 100 years. And he’s approaching it with the same, unruffled demeanor as when he was a rookie.“I think that’s why we were so consistent last year,” utilityman Brock Holt said this week as the team made the transition from workouts to the exhibition season.“If we won, we came in here, turned the music on, showered, went home. If we lost, we didn’t turn the music on,” Holt said. “That’s what helped us to be so consistent. It wasn’t any different; there was no panic. He stayed with his plan.”A native of Puerto Rico who is the first minority manager in franchise history and one of the youngest ever to run the Red Sox dugout, Cora didn’t need much time to figure things out in Boston. After losing their opener, they won nine straight games and 17 of the next 18.They finished the regular season 108-54 — the best record in franchise history, and eight games ahead of the rival Yankees. They never lost more than three in a row, and their worst stretch of six losses in eight games came in August after they were already 50 games above .500 with a double-digit lead in the division.Through it all, Cora never changed.“Over the course of 162 games Josh Donaldson Jersey , things aren’t always going to go well,” outfielder Andrew Benintendi said. “He stayed even-keeled.”But never distant. While some managers looked at the clubhouse as the players’ domain, Cora will be out among them, joking around or just checking in. It doesn’t hurt that he is only eight years older than first baseman Steve Pearce, and was teammates with second baseman Dustin Pedroia on the Boston team that won it all in 2007.Holt called Cora “one of the smartest baseball people” he’s met, and noted that the manager’s ability to speak both Spanish and English also helps him relate to many of the team’s Hispanic players.“He’s one of the best communicators I’ve ever been around in the game,” Holt said. “As players, we always know what to expect, what we need to do. You see him in here, joking around with guys. He talks to everyone. I enjoy being around someone who enjoys being around us.”The season-long effort to communicate paid off after Game 3 of the AL Division Series against the Yankees, when Holt became the first player in major league history to hit for the cycle in a postseason game.Cora texted him that night to say he would be benched for Game 4 in favor of Ian Kinsler.“I expected it before it even happened,” Holt said. “I didn’t think anything about it. We all knew what’s happening, and what we were trying to do.”Kinsler doubled in the game’s first run and the Red Sox advanced to the AL Championship Series. And Holt was back in the lineup for Game 1 against the Houston Astros. Boston lost that one before winning the next six games, taking a 2-0 lead in the World Series before the Dodgers slowed them down with an 18-inning victory in Game 3. The Red Sox finished Los Angeles off in five games.Cora is the fifth Red Sox manager to win it all in his first season in Boston, but the first ever to win as a managerial rookie. His .667 winning percentage is also the best in franchise history.Asked this week if there was anything he learned last year that he would do differently in his second season, Cora noted that it was coach Ramon Vazquez’s wife’s birthday, and that was an unexpected setback for the staff in 2018.“He forgot about it last year,” Cora said with a laugh. “So we made a point to FaceTime her. She’s in California, and we have a cake and balloons and everything. So we’re making adjustments on the fly.“We made sure he didn’t forget this year,” Cora said. “Yeah, I mean, teamwork.”

Feel free to introduce topics that interest you in the comments below.“Designated to return”A team can send an almost unlimited number of players to IR, but league rules limit each team to a maximum of two players who can return from IR in a season. This season the Redskins brought back their two players.Trey QuinnThe first was Trey Quinn.Jerome Miron-USA TODAY SportsQuinn was good for 26 yards and a TD against the Cowboys, but was re-injured, did not play against the Eagles, and is now back on IR — his season is over. His “irrelevant” rookie season ended with 9 receptions, 75 yards and a TD, along with one rush for ‘zero’ yards.Byron MarshallBob DeChiara-USA TODAY SportsAfter being injured in pre-season , Byron Marshall was re-activated ahead of the Week 11 game against Houston. His output in the 4 weeks since his return has been very limited.3 rushes for 9 yards3 receptions for 13 yardsPUPStacy McGeeMcGee wasn’t on IR; he was on the PUP list, which means he was already injured at the start of training camp, and remained injured when the regular season started and had not practiced at all at that point.Because he was on PUP rather than IR, McGee was able to come back to the roster, as he didn’t count against the 2-player limit. Here’s what James Dorsett said about Stacy McGee in this week’s Stats & Snaps article:NFIJosh HolseyJosh Holsey dropped a table on his foot in the offseason and was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Related Injury list, so — like Stacy McGee — he was eligible to return to the roster.Holsey was activated in mid-November, then waived the following day.He was replaced by Casey Dunn Cheap Montae Nicholson Jersey , who was placed on the Injured/Practice Squad list yesterday. To the best of my knowledge, Holsey is not currently on an NFL roster. Christian Miller, OLBSchool: Alabama | Conference: SECCollege Experience: RS Senior | Age: 22?Height / Weight: 6-4 / 244 lbsProjected Draft Status: 2nd or 3rd RoundNFL Comparison: K.J. WrightCollege StatisticsPlayer OverviewChristian Miller is the son of former NFL linebacker Corey Miller who played in the 90s. Corey had a distinguished college career at South Carolina and was selected in the 6th round of the 1991 NFL draft (which had 12 rounds back then) and played most of his NFL career for the New York Giants. Now his son Christian has finished his distinguished career at Alabama and looks to make an even bigger mark in the NFL than his dad did. Christian was a highly recruited 4-star prospect back in 2014. He chose Alabama for the opportunity to consistently play for Championships and also because they played more of a 3-4 defense which is why he spurned his offer from Clemson even though it was much closer to home. He got the opportunity four times to play for National Championships and came away with two trophies with the Crimson Tide. Miller made his mark this season as both a weak side and strong side linebacker and was devastating at times rushing from the edge. His college career came with highs and lows as he battle injuries but also showed that he can be one of the better EDGE prospects that comes out of this class. Miller’s health will have a lot to do with where he is ultimately selected but if he can stay healthy in the NFL he could be a Pro Bowl caliber player. StrengthsGood athleticism, quickness, and agility for the position. Really impressive at times with his flexibility off the edge can cut in at angles other prospects can not. Really good vision and instincts. He’s a better pass rusher than he is run defender but he isn’t a slouch in that area. Consistently is a factor not only in playing contain but collapsing the pocket and re-routing runs. If the runner comes in his vicinity he sees it and can disengage and help bring them down. Has versatility to play both base schemes. Has played from a 2 point stance as well as 3 and 4. Has experience dropping back into coverage and does a decent job sticking with running backs. Has played both weak and strong side. Disruptive with good finishing ability. When he makes contact he wraps up. Has some pop to his hits.Already has several counter moves under his belt and knows how to change them together to get around the edge.WeaknessesInjury history. He missed 10 games last year due to a biceps injury. He missed some time this year with a strained hamstring. Recovery and medical evals will be important to him. While a good athlete he does not have that elite straight line speed you’ll see out of other elite players at the position like Von Miller, Clay Matthews, Khalil Mack etc. Missed a few potential big plays because of it.Functional strength could improve. Let’s see his work:More Christian Miller videosHow He Would Fit On The RedskinsMiller has been one of my favorite players to watch all season. I think he is extremely talented and if not for nagging injuries he would have put together an even bigger season. When he is healthy and on the field he can be dominant. If he can remain healthy will be the big money question for Miller. Based on talent alone I think Miller could essentially play outside linebacker for any team in the NFL and have success. I think his skillset despite lacking the size Youth Brandon Scherff Jersey , power, and length the Redskins usually prioritize at the position would add a much needed element to the pass rush. Miller has the pass rushing talent to contribute day one as a weak side linebacker if the Redskins don’t feel comfortable with Ryan Anderson for some reason. Truth be told the Redskins would benefit from having 3 potential starting quality OLBs on the roster. This is not only out of consideration of the snap counts at the position last season especially down the stretch. It’s also would give the defense a lot more versatility in deploying certain alignments, packages, and sub packages especially on passing downs. Custom Buffalo Bills Jerseys

The Arizona Cardinals against the Denver Broncos or the San Francisco 49ers against the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams win has all but cemented them as winners in the division unless they were to go on a massive losing skid (that has happened). They sit 3.5 games ahead of the Seattle Seahawks , and at their current pace, it’s hard to see LA slipping. The 49ers just want a win, and they weren’t getting it. The Cardinals would like a second win, and they weren’t getting it against the Denver Broncos who managed to save Vance Joseph’s job for another week or two. The Seahawks are on bye, so they weren’t participants at all in this mess. Arizona CardinalsThe Cardinals suffered a pummeling of their own, but not near as deflating to their emotions when they got thumped by the Denver Broncos 45-10. The Cardinals looked atrocious on the field, unable to do anything against the Broncos defense. So bad, the organization canned offensive coordinator Mike McCoy the very next day. It’s amazing how McCoy has fallen, considering he was one of the hot coaches in the league at one point. One has to wonder how the 49ers managed to lose to this Cardinals team, but all you have to do is look at the way they played against the Rams (*cough* more turnovers) to see how. They have a chance to right the ship Pierre Garcon jersey , because the 49ers head to Arizona to take on the Cardinals in yet another divisional matchup.Los Angeles RamsAt 7-0, the Rams hold a 3.5-game lead in the NFC West. They could very well find a way to collapse, but that seems highly unlikely. The bigger question is if they can win out and get into the playoffs with an unblemished record. BetDSI Sportsbook is offering 25/1 odds on an undefeated record. You can then bet on them losing their first game in each of the remaining weeks.Week 8 (vs. Packers) +325Week 9 (at Saints) +150Week 10 (vs. Seahawks) +650Week 11 (vs. Chiefs) +350Week 13 (at Lions) +750Week 14 (at Bears) +400Week 15 (vs. Eagles) +700Week 16 (at Cardinals) +2000Week 17 (vs. 49ers) +1500No loss (16-0) +2500The Chiefs game in Mexico City is a big pick, but that Saints game is a fascinating one. The best sleeper might be Week 14 at the Bears. If they have locked up home-field heading into their final two games, do they rest starters, or play out for the undefeated record?Seattle SeahawksThe Seahawks had a bye this past week, and currently sit at 3-3. They have a lot of question marks, but with after the Rams and New Orleans Saints, the NFC is fairly wide open. They are a half game back of the second wild card berth, and while a division title seems out of reach Authentic Laken Tomlinson jersey , a wild card berth at least gets them into the tournament.Home teams have the edge, but all you need is a chance. The Seahawks would be among the longer shots in the playoffs, but right now, you can get some intriguing Super Bowl odds on them. Bovada has them listed at 50/1, while the Westgate SuperBook has them at 100/1. The only other Westgate odds I might consider for long-term value would be the Bears at 60/1. Into Week 8The Rams’ dominance tour takes them to a home game against the Green Bay Packers, where I’m sure it will come down to the final minutes but they will hang on, because the football gods hate 49ers fans. The Seahawks return from their bye to take on the Detroit Lions, who are picking up some momentum. And the 49ers will have a battle for the bottom of the barrel with the Arizona Cardinals. That’s a game that will be terribly amazing. 1st: Los Angeles Rams; Next: vs. Green Bay Packers2nd: Seattle Seahawks; Next: at Detroit Lions3rd: Arizona Cardinals; Next: vs. San Francisco 49ers4th: San Francisco 49ers; Next: at Arizona CardinalsGolden Nuggets: High scoring game Sunday The San Francisco 49ers will have themselves a test when they head to Kansas City to face the Chiefs on Sunday. If you don’t think they will have their hands full, you’re delusional. The Chiefs are coming off two of the most explosive games ever and will look to continue on against the 49ers. Yet, the 49ers might have a chance. A slim one Youth Marquise Goodwin jersey , but if Garoppolo can get the ball out and get things going, then the 49ers might be able to match the Chiefs strike for strike. The defense may not be able to do much. We’ve seen what it can do—which is allow the Detroit Lions to run up 27 points on them. So this game is going to rest on Jimmy G, and while I’m still happy he’s the starting quarterback, he’s got a lot to do in this game. So this is going to be an offensive game, a big one. Unless the 49ers have enough tape to expose Patrick Mahomes, which is going to happen at some point. pocket and scrambled all the way to his left Youth Mike Person Jersey , only to realize that just about everybody wearing a Chiefs helmet was on the opposite side of the field. It was a rookie mistake by the second-year pro, one he turned into more early season magic.Mahomes quickly reversed field against the pursuing San Francisco defense, ran all the way to the other side and threw a dart to Chris Conley in the back of the end zone. It was one of three TD passes he threw in a 38-27 victory over the 49ers on Sunday — and easily the most impressive ."That," Chiefs coach Andy Reid acknowledged with a smile, "was a good one."Mahomes finished with 314 yards passing in his first regular-season start at Arrowhead Stadium, and his touchdown throws to Conley, Demetrius Harris and Sammy Watkins gave him 13 this season without an interception. That total broke the NFL record of 12 for the first three weeks of a season, set by Peyton Manning during the 2013 campaign.More importantly, all those touchdown tosses have the Chiefs 3-0. They are the third team to score at least 38 points in each of the first three games, joining 2007 New England and the 1967 Baltimore Colts."We've got a bunch of weapons Youth Adrian Colbert Jersey ," said Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt, who added his first two touchdown runs this season, "and Pat is just a competitor. I knew that from the day we met, when we got drafted together. We said one day we were going to take over the Chiefs Kingdom."The Chiefs have clearly found their long-term answer at quarterback. The 49ers? They have a whole lot of questions now.Jimmy Garoppolo left late in the fourth quarter after his left knee buckled during a scramble to the sideline. He was crushed on his throwing shoulder by the Chiefs' Steven Nelson, but the damage was already done, and the 49ers' franchise quarterback was carted off to the locker room."We fear an ACL," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. "We'll find out for sure tomorrow."The 49ers (1-2) trailed 35-7 late in the first half before rallying behind Garoppolo, who threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns. Matt Breida added 90 yards rushing and Alfred Morris scored on the ground as San Francisco clawed to within 35-24 late in the third quarter. It was still 38-24 when the 49ers produced a grinding, 17-play drive that wiped out more than half the fourth quarter. But it ended in a strange sequence that began with Garoppolo taking the shot from Nelson along the sideline, rather than stepping out of bounds and avoiding the hit."I think that was his fault ," said Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston, who was trailing the play. "I pray he's not hurt, it's nothing serious, but as a quarterback you should step out of bounds. It's only an inch. An inch wouldn't have made a difference. You got the yardage. You need to be smart."C.J. Beathard came in on third-and-goal and threw what appeared to be a touchdown pass to George Kittle, but it was wiped out by offensive pass interference with 5:17 left in the game.Rather than go for it on fourth down at the Kansas City 25, Shanahan elected to kick a field goal — keeping it a two-possession game. Then the 49ers kicked it deep rather than try an onside kick, and the Chiefs picked up a first down by penalty before Hunt churned for two more and put the game away."That's our time in the game," Reid said. "You take a lot of pride in it. They're going backward and we're going forward and it's all good."MORE ON GAROPPOLOShanahan acknowledged a quarterback move is likely, though Beathard is line to start next week in Los Angeles. The 49ers' only other QB is Nick Mullins, a member of the practice squad. "I just talked to (Garoppolo) in the training room ," Beathard said. "I told him I'll be praying for him and I love him and he just told me to lead these guys."FOSTER'S FRUSTRATION49ers LB Reuben Foster had a rough return from a two-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct and substance abuse policy. Foster was hit with a personal foul for hitting Mahomes as the QB was sliding in the first half, Kelce beat him in pass defense, and the young linebacker left early in the fourth quarter when he was shaken up on a tackle.INJURIES49ers: The defensive backfield was in tatters by the fourth quarter. CB Richard Sherman left with a calf injury, FS Adrian Colbert hurt his ankle and backup CB Tarvarius Moore left with a wrist injury. SS Jaquiski Taylor was already inactive with a shoulder injury.Chiefs: LB Dee Ford left with a groin injury in the fourth quarter. He will have an MRI exam Monday ... Conley briefly left with a right ankle injury, though he returned to make his TD catch. ... SS Eric Berry (heel) remained inactive for the third straight week.UP NEXT49ers: Play the Chargers in Los Angeles next Sunday.Chiefs: Visit the AFC West-rival Broncos next Monday night.Mike McGlinchey expects to play Sunday vs. Cardinals The San Francisco 49ers offensive line took some hits this past week against the Los Angeles Chargers, but the unit appears to be making progress for Week 5 vs. the Arizona Cardinals. Left tackle Joe Staley, right tackle Mike McGlinchey, and center Weston Richburg all missed Wednesday’s practice, but McGlinchey and Richburg appear set to get some work in on Thursday.McGlinchey told the media before practice that the MRI on his knee came back clean, and he expects to play on Sunday. Richburg did not miss any snaps last week , but a knee injury had him banged up. The 49ers will release their official practice report in an hour or so, but it would appear both McGlinchey and Richburg will be listed as no worse than limited.Staley is the kind of guy who can get limited practice in and still be cleared for the game. My guess is he will get a DNP or limited designation on Thursday, and then a limited designation on Friday. If he is unable to play on Sunday, Garry Gilliam would start in his place.Richard Sherman is back at practice, but his status is up in the air. He was ruled out fairly quickly last week, and the expectation was that he would probably miss this week’s game. Sherman spoke to the media on Thursday before practice, and would not rule out being able to play. He said he would practice on Thursday and they would see how things develop from there. My guess is he doesn’t play on Sunday, but he is pushing for it.Marquise Goodwin did not practice on Wednesday as he was dealing with hamstring and quadricep issues. The team will already be without Dante Pettis on Sunday, so getting Goodwin back would be big for depth on the outside. We’ll have the full injury report later this afternoon or early evening.

San Francisco 49ers Hoodie , one more day and we get to see the 2019 version of C.J. Beathard. Two things going into this, because I’ve written at length about all of this madness (and I’m still not done); 1) Thank goodness it’s no longer his rookie season because even Peyton Manning had a subpar rookie season (56.7 completion percentage, 26 touchdowns, 28 interceptions) 2) As atrocious as last season was for him, at least he got some playing time. This year the first game jitters will have worn off and it won’t be near as overwhealming with the above going on. A while back I said Beathard got the best situation he could ask for, starting, then going to the bench as a backup. He got a taste of the NFL game which makes him a far better backup than someone who is green and coming into things when games matter. These games aren’t en route to a Super Bowl appearance, but at least Beathard can run the offense to Shanahan’s specifications. Some games this year are going to be bad, but they won’t be near as bad as think they can be thanks to Beathard’s experience. Let’s hope for improvement. The third round pick moved into the starting lineup with Reuben Foster’s suspension, and has become the leader of the middle of the defense with Malcolm Smith sidelined with a hamstring injury.Warner has received plenty of praise for his football intelligence, moving into the MIKE role in his debut. He handles the play-calls, receiving them from the defensive coaching staff and getting the defense in position. In Week 1, he handled that, while also leading the team in tackles and forcing a fumble. He was all over the field, reminiscent of the a couple of the 49ers recent franchise linebackers. It’s too early to say what his career will bring, but he could not have gotten off to a better start.Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, cornerback Richard Sherman, and general manager John Lynch all were asked about Warner’s performance. They praised his awareness. with Saleh and Sherman both praising Warner’s film study. Saleh said he regularly saw him buried in film outside of practice. Sherman said that while he did not regularly see him studying film like Saleh, the way he performed proved he was regularly staying on top of things.Saleh said there was room for improvement, with mistakes that the average fan would miss. Lynch thought Saleh was going a little overboard, but acknowledge there is always room for improvement.Warner will start once again on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, although this time Elijah Lee is expected to start next to him following Brock Coyle’s back injury. Expectations are only growing for Warner.Saleh on his performance: “I thought he had good command of the huddle, did a really good job relaying the message of the calls, did a great job getting people lined up. He made plays when they were presented to him. Saw the game very well. He did have mistakes , some that are not seen to the naked eye. So, he’s got a lot of stuff that he does have to clean up. Statistically, obviously, he produced and made a lot of plays. But, he’ll tell you himself that there’s a lot of room to get better.”Saleh on Warner film study: “I think that’s just who he is. That’s part of the whole evaluation process. He’s a film junky. That’s what he was coming out of BYU. You see him eating breakfast and watching tape. He’s sitting at a table by himself in the cafeteria and he’s got the tape rolling. He’s always deep in the film. If he continues to progress the way he is, he does have a bright future. But, like I said, consistency is the truest measure of performance. He’s got to consistently do it until he proves that that is who he is.”Sherman on his performance: “He did a good, he did a really good job. He was calm, he was poised. If you didn’t know he was a rookie, you’d have never guessed he was a rookie. He was deliberate, made a lot of great tackles. Obviously, the forced fumble was a huge play. But got his hands on multiple footballs, got a QB hit. He was all over the place.”Sherman on his film study: I don’t track him and see where he is at all times, but you can see it on the field. You can see that he’s always in the right spot, he recognizes plays really fast. He diagnoses things San Francisco 49ers T-Shirt , he gets to his spots. So those are things that you can see he really puts the work in and puts the time in. Anytime a rookie middle linebacker, that’s like, as they call it, the quarterback of the defense — come out there with a rookie, and you play well — he had to be incredibly prepared.Lynch: ”Fred Warner, shoot, that’s a really good rookie debut. I think Bob [Saleh] is splitting hairs when he says there’s a lot to work on. With every player there is 鈥?Fred had a really good debut. It really didn’t surprise a lot of us because he’s kind of been a guy who’s passed every test since he’s been here. He’s a really good player, and I think he showed he can do it on a big stage. Now you just improve upon that. I think there’s little subtleties, but one thing we know about Fred, he’s talented, and then he sees the game incredibly well. People call it instincts, knowing your assignment. But I think it’s a little bit beyond knowing your assignment. He just sees things.”

SNF The San Francisco 49ers lost Jimmy Garoppolo for the season nine days ago , and I imagine NFL executives were none too pleased about what it might mean for ratings. There was a report some in the league wanted the 49ers to trade for Nick Foles in hopes that would make them more competitive.C.J. Beathard offered a strong performance in Week 4, and the team seems to be in OK shape for the time being. But there is still the concern about getting flexed out of a primetime game. The 49ers’ schedule includes two Monday Night Football games, two Sunday Night Football games, and their one mandatory Thursday Night Football game. They cannot be flexed out of MNF or TNF, but they can be flexed out of SNF. The 49ers’ SNF schedule includes a Week 7 (October 21) home game with the Los Angeles Rams and a Week 13 (December 2) road game against the Seattle Seahawks. The NFL has until October 9 (a week from today) to decide whether or not to flex the 49ers Week 7 game against the Rams. The Bears-Patriots game is an option for flexing into SNF, while Bengals-Chiefs and Saints-Ravens could also depending on how those teams perform this weekend.C.J. Beathard looked solid on Sunday and the 49ers almost beat the Chargers. If they beat Arizona this weekend and don’t look bad in doing so, I think the NFL sticks with 49ers-Rams. After all, we saw a wildly entertaining 49ers-Rams TNF game last year, so maybe we see a solid follow-up.The bigger question is what to make of the 49ers-Seahawks SNF game in Week 13. It’s far too early to tell who might be out of the playoff picture that is currently in (and vice versa), but Vikings-Patriots could be a front-runner. Panthers-Bucs will depend on how Jameis Winston looks coming out of the bye, but if both teams are in contention, it might make sense. 49ers-Seahawks could hang onto the game, but there is a lot of lead time to change that. Quarterbacks are lighting it up at a record-setting pace this season with 228 touchdown throws in the first month of the season.Case Keenum hasn't joined the party. The Denver Broncos' new quarterback has just three touchdown passes — none since the opener against Seattle — and his six interceptions are just one shy of the total he had last season in Minnesota.Keenum is the first Broncos QB since John Elway in 1986 to go three consecutive games with 20 throws and zero touchdowns."Is it a concern? Not really," coach Vance Joseph said Wednesday. "Our concern is winning football games. ... But Case is going to get better and better with time. We're figuring out who we are as an offense. It's a month into the season, I've been proud of how Case is playing."If Keenum throws a touchdown pass Sunday when the Broncos (2-2) visit the Jets (1-3) Youth Mike Person Jersey , it'll be his first in 28 days."I don't care how we get into the end zone," Keenum said. "Obviously, I like throwing touchdowns. I like when those guys are running them in, too. We've got two great backs" in rookies Royce Freeman and Phillip Lindsay."They're doing a great job. But we've got a bunch of targets. Receivers, tight ends, they want to get into the end zone, too," Keenum said. "So, whatever it takes. I know the whole team is that way and whatever it takes to score more points than the other team, whether it's run or pass" is the goal. "But yeah, we'd love to get more passes going."Keenum would have had a fourth TD pass to go with his third fourth-quarter comeback for the Broncos had he connected with a wide-open Demaryius Thomas streaking down the sideline Monday night in the final seconds of Denver's 27-23 loss to the Chiefs in which they squandered a 10-point fourth-quarter lead.On third down from the Kansas City 28 with 22 seconds left, Keenum saw the cornerback jam Thomas, then release him to the safeties, both of whom were deep in the end zone.No linebacker to layer to throw over.No safeties to freeze with his eyes.No over-the-shoulder pinpoint pass needed.Just a basic delivery to his big receiver.Keenum stepped up and ... rifled it over Thomas' head .Keenum loved the play call by offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, who's taken some heat for using three-receiver sets without a fullback or tight end on a three-and-out series sandwiched between Patrick Mahomes ' two TD drives that rallied the unbeaten Chiefs."It was a great play call by Bill Youth Adrian Colbert Jersey , trying to take a shot at the end zone and they played two high safeties," Keenum said. "I threw it where I wanted to, just a little high. It was just a little bit off. And that's the game. It's a game of inches. Would I have liked to have that one back? Heck yeah. But I know we're going to make a lot more of those than we don't."So, I gave it my best shot and I can't lose anymore sleep over it," Keenum said. "We've got a lot more games to play. We've got a tough test this week. So, I've squashed it. I've learned from it. I've moved on."Being in all four games with a chance to pull out the win gives Keenum hope he can find his rhythm like he did in leading the Vikings to the NFC championship game last season."We haven't played our best football yet and we've had a chance to win every game," Keenum said. "... I'm excited where we're at. I'm even more excited where we're headed."MARSHALL's MOVEMENTThe Broncos and Brandon Marshall announced a $50,000 commitment to help launch the linebacker's FEEL (Feed and Educate to Empower Leaders) Movement in Denver. The initiative was announced 48 hours after Marshall and Thomas both stood with their teammates during "The Star-Spangled Banner" Monday night after staying inside during the national anthem for the first three games.Marshall, who followed the lead of his college teammate Colin Kaepernick in taking a knee during the national anthem in the past, said he and Thomas felt that they had made their point by continuing to draw attention to social injustice."The protest is just a symbol. The knee is just a symbol. It's not everything. The action, what we do in the community, that's everything," Marshall said. "I definitely think the knee was important to get everybody's attention, but more-so it's about what everyone's doing in the community."

embarrassing loss Another week and the New York Giants have managed to let another winnable game slip through their fingers. The Giants are once again in the basement of the NFC East after dropping a divisional game to the Dallas Cowboys. The good news is that they are only a game behind the rest of the division Youth Kerry Wynn Jersey , but the bad news is that the way they lost looked entirely too familiar. The team might have shown some promise in their Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. At first blush, that promise evaporated in the week since, but let’s take a look at some of the deeper stats and see what we can learn.Offense The Giants dominated the time of possession on offense, outsnapping the Cowboys offense 68 to 53. However, that overwhelming advantage in plays run didn’t translate into much, as most of the Giants’ offensive efforts were an exercise in futility. Eli Manning had an efficient night, completing 33-of-44 attempts (75 percent) and scoring a touchdown. However, a closer look at his passing chart shows just how conservative the Giants’ offense was. Manning was nearly perfect on passes inside of ten yards, completing 17 of 18 attempts, a number which ballooned to 28 of 31 when we include passes behind the line of scrimmage. But while the West Coast ethos of “you don’t go broke making a profit” rings true in general, the Giants only rarely seemed to threaten the Cowboys deep. Shurmur’s offense is designed to use vertical elements to clear out coverage underneath, and Manning has always thrived when the has the option to attack a defense deep. The Giants’ game-plan appeared to have neither, and was far too easily boxed in by Dallas’ base defense of man coverage under a Cover 2 shell. This defensive scheme is nothing new for the Giants as they faced it consistently since 2016, and was exactly the reason why Jerry Reese drafted Evan Engram. The hybrid tight end played 60 snaps (88 percent), and his ability against 2-Man coverage was on display against Dallas, when he was used. Engram finished a perfect 7 receptions on 7 targets for 67 yards and a touchdown Sunday night, averaging an absurd 6.64 yards of separation per Next Gen Stats. However, of those 7 receptions, only one was run more than 5 yards down the field, his touchdown. It is also important to note that four of Engram’s receptions came after the Giants had fallen behind 20-3.Saquon Barkley, who played 58 snaps (85 percent) was the Giants’ most prolific receiver, catching 14 of 16 targets (not typos) for 80 yards. But he, too, rarely went down the field, catching 9 of his 14 receptions behind the line of scrimmage. Barkley also carried the ball 11 times, gaining just 28 yards. The Giants did send Odell Beckham Jr. — who played 66 of 68 snaps — down the field, having him run more than 10 yards on 6 of his 9 targets. Unfortunately, he only caught 4 of those 9 targets for 51 yards.Beyond those players, there was a sharp delineation in the players who were in the Giants’ gameplan and those who weren’t. Other than the starting offensive line Curtis Riley Jersey , only six Giants played more than 65 percent of the Giants’ snaps, Eli Manning, Odell Beckham Sterling Shepard, Cody Latimer, Evan Engram, and Saquon Barkley. Rhett Ellison only played 24 snaps, Wayne Gallman and Jonathan Stewart each played 5 snaps, WR Russell Shepard played six snaps, FB Shane Smith played 4 snaps, and TE Scott Simonson played three snaps. For an offense that promised to use — if not feature — aggression down the field and a robust personnel rotation based in a 12-personnel alignment, the Giants’ offense against the Dallas Cowboys resembled nothing so much as the Giants under Ben McAdoo, and performed similarly. DefenseThe Giants’ defense only played 53 snaps, giving up just 20 points for the second week in a row. The defense was lead by Landon Collins, Janoris Jenkins, and Alec Ogletree who each played all of the defensive snaps. They each also notched six total tackles. The defensive line was lead by Dalvin Tomlinson, who played 39 snaps, and Damon Harrison who played 34. Rounding out the front seven were EDGE players Kareem Martin, who played 47 snaps, and Connor Barwin, who played 36 snaps. The Giants mounted no effective pass rush, and Tomlinson was the team’s most effective rusher, and was the only one to approach the league’s average distance from the QB across all his pass rush snaps. Third round rookies B.J. Hill and Lorenzo Carter only played 22 and 21 snaps, respectively. Given the ineffectiveness of the Giants’ pass rush, James Bettcher will want to incorporate the athletic rookies more in future games. Eli Apple played 33 snaps before leaving the game with a groin injury. That could prove to be a costly injury going forward, as Apple was having a bounce-back season and has been excellent in coverage through the first two games. He was replaced by B.W. Webb, who played a total of 41 snaps, and Donte Deayon who played 13 snaps in the slot, notching a pass defensed in that time. The team appeared to spend most of their time in a heavy nickel package, with four down linemen and linebackers B.J. Goodson and Ray-Ray Armstrong splitting time next to Ogletree. Goodson played 30 snaps while Armstrong played the remaining 23. The Giants’ defense got off to a rough start Nate Solder Jersey , giving up 10 points in Dallas’ first two drives. However, for the second week in a row they settled down and managed to do enough for the team to win. The lack of a pass rush will be a problem going forward, and the Giants need to figure out a solution independent of Olivier Vernon. The injured EDGE player might not be back for next week’s match-up against the Houston Texans, and having only one viable pass rusher is not a tenable situation. Neither Martin, Wynn, nor Barwin have the speed to scare offenses. Perhaps the team will need to actively look to incorporate Carter and find situations for him to unleash his athleticism. The team showed some promising things in the first week of the season, but rather than building on them, managed to regress in nearly all areas in Week 2. The New York Giants lost on Monday night to the Atlanta Falcons, 23-20, are once again 1-6, and are closing in on having the first overall pick in the NFL Draft. There was plenty we already knew about the 2018 Giants that was confirmed in this mess of a Monday night game:The third iteration of the rebuilt offenisve line is bad. The Giants have all the firepower they can ask for in Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard, and Saquon Barkley. They are also utterly incapable of consistently putting it to use. The Giants’ defense is flawed, but tries hard and shouldn’t be blamed for their losing record. However, there were some things that we learned.Eli can still throw down the fieldThe Giants signaled that they were going to be aggressive with their receivers when the first pass of the game was a 10-yard play to Beckham. The Giants were cautious in their use of Saquon Barkley, but finally showed a willingness to challenge a poor secondary with Beckham and Sterling Shepard. Manning completed 71 percent of his passes, finishing with 399 yards passing and a yards per attempt of 10.5, his highest of the season. While the Giants did get good runs after the catch from both Beckham and Shepard, Manning also looked down the field far more than he had against the Eagles. Eli’s game was far from perfect, but it was nice to see him threaten a defense down the field, even in the face of pressure — Something the Giants largely have not done this season. We won’t know whether or not the Giants can sustain I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Eli Manning just looks like a different quarterback when he has the option to attack a defense, rather than just take what it gives him.The Giants can’t play in the red zoneFor all the Giants’ offensive firepower, it shouldn’t really surprise that they are utterly inept in the red zone. The short field that comes with play in the red zone has a bunch of effects on the game. Everything is sped up because offenses simply can’t stretch defenses out they way can between the 20s. Secondaries don’t have to cover as much space, receivers don’t have as much space in which to work, and passing windows are smaller. The red zone is the area of the field in which all the little problems elsewhere on the field rear their heads at once, and the Giants have plenty of them. Slight miscommunications are magnified and being just off-target becomes wildly inaccurate. And small lapses in blocking can become drive-killing mistakes. The Giants routinely do all of these on offense, and it shows in Red Zone play which is just bad. It isn’t as simple as just having a big receiver — Both Sterling Shepard and Odell Beckham are capable of playing far larger than they measure thanks to their quickness and 40-inch vertical leaps. Evan Engram was a premier red zone threat in 2017, but he isn’t used in the same way in this offense. The Giants’ offensive line can’t hold up or create any kind of room for Barkley to run the ball. Poor play calls and miscommunications waste opportunities. The Giants have a lot of little (and some very big) problems which compound and magnify each other Authentic Sterling Shepard Jersey , and need to be solved individually before they will have consistent success in the Red Zone. The pass rush might have some lifeThe Giants came in to Monday night with the worst pass rush in the NFL. Granted it was against an offensive line that has done about as good a job of In Olivier Vernon’s second game back, the Giants’ pass rush finally started to show some life. With Olivier Vernon giving the Falcons’ offensive line a legitimate pass rush threat to worry about, the Giants’ other rushers began to find some success, with Kerry Wynn, Lorenzo Carter, Mario Edwards (negated by a defensive holding penalty), all getting to Ryan. James Bettcher also mixed in plenty of schemed pressure with some aggressive blitz calls, which forced Matt Ryan to speed up his process. For the third time this season the Giants’ defense did enough for the team to win. They held an offense which had averaged nearly 30 points a game to 23, and gave the offense opportunity after opportunity to win the game. And once again, the Giants’ offense failed to capitalize. It remains to be seen if the Giants can repeat the defensive feat against the Washington Redskins’ talented offensive line, but for now it was good to see.Pat Shurmur’s bad decisions continueGiants’ head coach Pat Shurmur has made curious, or downright bad, decisions throughout the season. There was consternation regarding Shurmur’s decision to go for 2 points on the team’s first touchdown. That call made sense from a math perspective — best case, the next score would be for the win, worst case it was still a one score game. The move also signaled to his team that he IS trying to win the game, something that his offensive scheme hasn’t always indicated. THAT decision wound up being moot, as the team scored another touchdown and completed a second 2-point conversion attempt. MUCH more egregious, Shurmur called a pair of quarterback sneaks in the final minute with the Giants out of time outs and desperately trying to mount a comeback. Manning took advantage of a bad Falcons offense to get the Giants in scoring position in a flash. But with no timeouts remaining, the Giants had to score, and quickly. Failing that, they needed to get the clock stopped. Instead, the Giants ran a pair of quarterback sneaks with an offensive line that had been utterly dominated all game long. This is on top of the schematic decision to not use Saquon Barkley as a downfield passing threat. Barkley was targeted plenty, 10 times, catching 9. But on those targets, he only got 51 yards, with a long of 14. Shurmur flatly refused to send Barkley down the field in a game where Sterling Shepard had 167 receiving yards and Odell Beckham 143 and a touchdown.
