during the season , and aims to provide a forum for reader-driven discussion at a time of day when there isn’t much NFL news being published. Feel free to introduce topics that interest you in the comments below.“Designated to return”A team can send an almost unlimited number of players to IR, but league rules limit each team to a maximum of two players who can return from IR in a season. This season the Redskins brought back their two players.Trey QuinnThe first was Trey Quinn.Jerome Miron-USA TODAY SportsQuinn was good for 26 yards and a TD against the Cowboys, but was re-injured, did not play against the Eagles, and is now back on IR — his season is over. His “irrelevant” rookie season ended with 9 receptions, 75 yards and a TD, along with one rush for ‘zero’ yards.Byron MarshallBob DeChiara-USA TODAY SportsAfter being injured in pre-season , Byron Marshall was re-activated ahead of the Week 11 game against Houston. His output in the 4 weeks since his return has been very limited.3 rushes for 9 yards3 receptions for 13 yardsPUPStacy McGeeMcGee wasn’t on IR; he was on the PUP list, which means he was already injured at the start of training camp, and remained injured when the regular season started and had not practiced at all at that point.Because he was on PUP rather than IR, McGee was able to come back to the roster, as he didn’t count against the 2-player limit. Here’s what James Dorsett said about Stacy McGee in this week’s Stats & Snaps article:NFIJosh HolseyJosh Holsey dropped a table on his foot in the offseason and was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Related Injury list, so — like Stacy McGee — he was eligible to return to the roster.Holsey was activated in mid-November, then waived the following day.He was replaced by Casey Dunn Cheap Montae Nicholson Jersey , who was placed on the Injured/Practice Squad list yesterday. To the best of my knowledge, Holsey is not currently on an NFL roster. Christian Miller, OLBSchool: Alabama | Conference: SECCollege Experience: RS Senior | Age: 22?Height / Weight: 6-4 / 244 lbsProjected Draft Status: 2nd or 3rd RoundNFL Comparison: K.J. WrightCollege StatisticsPlayer OverviewChristian Miller is the son of former NFL linebacker Corey Miller who played in the 90s. Corey had a distinguished college career at South Carolina and was selected in the 6th round of the 1991 NFL draft (which had 12 rounds back then) and played most of his NFL career for the New York Giants. Now his son Christian has finished his distinguished career at Alabama and looks to make an even bigger mark in the NFL than his dad did. Christian was a highly recruited 4-star prospect back in 2014. He chose Alabama for the opportunity to consistently play for Championships and also because they played more of a 3-4 defense which is why he spurned his offer from Clemson even though it was much closer to home. He got the opportunity four times to play for National Championships and came away with two trophies with the Crimson Tide. Miller made his mark this season as both a weak side and strong side linebacker and was devastating at times rushing from the edge. His college career came with highs and lows as he battle injuries but also showed that he can be one of the better EDGE prospects that comes out of this class. Miller’s health will have a lot to do with where he is ultimately selected but if he can stay healthy in the NFL he could be a Pro Bowl caliber player. StrengthsGood athleticism, quickness, and agility for the position. Really impressive at times with his flexibility off the edge can cut in at angles other prospects can not. Really good vision and instincts. He’s a better pass rusher than he is run defender but he isn’t a slouch in that area. Consistently is a factor not only in playing contain but collapsing the pocket and re-routing runs. If the runner comes in his vicinity he sees it and can disengage and help bring them down. Has versatility to play both base schemes. Has played from a 2 point stance as well as 3 and 4. Has experience dropping back into coverage and does a decent job sticking with running backs. Has played both weak and strong side. Disruptive with good finishing ability. When he makes contact he wraps up. Has some pop to his hits.Already has several counter moves under his belt and knows how to change them together to get around the edge.WeaknessesInjury history. He missed 10 games last year due to a biceps injury. He missed some time this year with a strained hamstring. Recovery and medical evals will be important to him. While a good athlete he does not have that elite straight line speed you’ll see out of other elite players at the position like Von Miller, Clay Matthews, Khalil Mack etc. Missed a few potential big plays because of it.Functional strength could improve. Let’s see his work:More Christian Miller videosHow He Would Fit On The RedskinsMiller has been one of my favorite players to watch all season. I think he is extremely talented and if not for nagging injuries he would have put together an even bigger season. When he is healthy and on the field he can be dominant. If he can remain healthy will be the big money question for Miller. Based on talent alone I think Miller could essentially play outside linebacker for any team in the NFL and have success. I think his skillset despite lacking the size Youth Brandon Scherff Jersey , power, and length the Redskins usually prioritize at the position would add a much needed element to the pass rush. Miller has the pass rushing talent to contribute day one as a weak side linebacker if the Redskins don’t feel comfortable with Ryan Anderson for some reason. Truth be told the Redskins would benefit from having 3 potential starting quality OLBs on the roster. This is not only out of consideration of the snap counts at the position last season especially down the stretch. It’s also would give the defense a lot more versatility in deploying certain alignments, packages, and sub packages especially on passing downs. Custom Buffalo Bills Jerseys

The Arizona Cardinals against the Denver Broncos or the San Francisco 49ers against the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams win has all but cemented them as winners in the division unless they were to go on a massive losing skid (that has happened). They sit 3.5 games ahead of the Seattle Seahawks , and at their current pace, it’s hard to see LA slipping. The 49ers just want a win, and they weren’t getting it. The Cardinals would like a second win, and they weren’t getting it against the Denver Broncos who managed to save Vance Joseph’s job for another week or two. The Seahawks are on bye, so they weren’t participants at all in this mess. Arizona CardinalsThe Cardinals suffered a pummeling of their own, but not near as deflating to their emotions when they got thumped by the Denver Broncos 45-10. The Cardinals looked atrocious on the field, unable to do anything against the Broncos defense. So bad, the organization canned offensive coordinator Mike McCoy the very next day. It’s amazing how McCoy has fallen, considering he was one of the hot coaches in the league at one point. One has to wonder how the 49ers managed to lose to this Cardinals team, but all you have to do is look at the way they played against the Rams (*cough* more turnovers) to see how. They have a chance to right the ship Pierre Garcon jersey , because the 49ers head to Arizona to take on the Cardinals in yet another divisional matchup.Los Angeles RamsAt 7-0, the Rams hold a 3.5-game lead in the NFC West. They could very well find a way to collapse, but that seems highly unlikely. The bigger question is if they can win out and get into the playoffs with an unblemished record. BetDSI Sportsbook is offering 25/1 odds on an undefeated record. You can then bet on them losing their first game in each of the remaining weeks.Week 8 (vs. Packers) +325Week 9 (at Saints) +150Week 10 (vs. Seahawks) +650Week 11 (vs. Chiefs) +350Week 13 (at Lions) +750Week 14 (at Bears) +400Week 15 (vs. Eagles) +700Week 16 (at Cardinals) +2000Week 17 (vs. 49ers) +1500No loss (16-0) +2500The Chiefs game in Mexico City is a big pick, but that Saints game is a fascinating one. The best sleeper might be Week 14 at the Bears. If they have locked up home-field heading into their final two games, do they rest starters, or play out for the undefeated record?Seattle SeahawksThe Seahawks had a bye this past week, and currently sit at 3-3. They have a lot of question marks, but with after the Rams and New Orleans Saints, the NFC is fairly wide open. They are a half game back of the second wild card berth, and while a division title seems out of reach Authentic Laken Tomlinson jersey , a wild card berth at least gets them into the tournament.Home teams have the edge, but all you need is a chance. The Seahawks would be among the longer shots in the playoffs, but right now, you can get some intriguing Super Bowl odds on them. Bovada has them listed at 50/1, while the Westgate SuperBook has them at 100/1. The only other Westgate odds I might consider for long-term value would be the Bears at 60/1. Into Week 8The Rams’ dominance tour takes them to a home game against the Green Bay Packers, where I’m sure it will come down to the final minutes but they will hang on, because the football gods hate 49ers fans. The Seahawks return from their bye to take on the Detroit Lions, who are picking up some momentum. And the 49ers will have a battle for the bottom of the barrel with the Arizona Cardinals. That’s a game that will be terribly amazing. 1st: Los Angeles Rams; Next: vs. Green Bay Packers2nd: Seattle Seahawks; Next: at Detroit Lions3rd: Arizona Cardinals; Next: vs. San Francisco 49ers4th: San Francisco 49ers; Next: at Arizona CardinalsGolden Nuggets: High scoring game Sunday The San Francisco 49ers will have themselves a test when they head to Kansas City to face the Chiefs on Sunday. If you don’t think they will have their hands full, you’re delusional. The Chiefs are coming off two of the most explosive games ever and will look to continue on against the 49ers. Yet, the 49ers might have a chance. A slim one Youth Marquise Goodwin jersey , but if Garoppolo can get the ball out and get things going, then the 49ers might be able to match the Chiefs strike for strike. The defense may not be able to do much. We’ve seen what it can do—which is allow the Detroit Lions to run up 27 points on them. So this game is going to rest on Jimmy G, and while I’m still happy he’s the starting quarterback, he’s got a lot to do in this game. So this is going to be an offensive game, a big one. Unless the 49ers have enough tape to expose Patrick Mahomes, which is going to happen at some point. pocket and scrambled all the way to his left Youth Mike Person Jersey , only to realize that just about everybody wearing a Chiefs helmet was on the opposite side of the field. It was a rookie mistake by the second-year pro, one he turned into more early season magic.Mahomes quickly reversed field against the pursuing San Francisco defense, ran all the way to the other side and threw a dart to Chris Conley in the back of the end zone. It was one of three TD passes he threw in a 38-27 victory over the 49ers on Sunday — and easily the most impressive ."That," Chiefs coach Andy Reid acknowledged with a smile, "was a good one."Mahomes finished with 314 yards passing in his first regular-season start at Arrowhead Stadium, and his touchdown throws to Conley, Demetrius Harris and Sammy Watkins gave him 13 this season without an interception. That total broke the NFL record of 12 for the first three weeks of a season, set by Peyton Manning during the 2013 campaign.More importantly, all those touchdown tosses have the Chiefs 3-0. They are the third team to score at least 38 points in each of the first three games, joining 2007 New England and the 1967 Baltimore Colts."We've got a bunch of weapons Youth Adrian Colbert Jersey ," said Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt, who added his first two touchdown runs this season, "and Pat is just a competitor. I knew that from the day we met, when we got drafted together. We said one day we were going to take over the Chiefs Kingdom."The Chiefs have clearly found their long-term answer at quarterback. The 49ers? They have a whole lot of questions now.Jimmy Garoppolo left late in the fourth quarter after his left knee buckled during a scramble to the sideline. He was crushed on his throwing shoulder by the Chiefs' Steven Nelson, but the damage was already done, and the 49ers' franchise quarterback was carted off to the locker room."We fear an ACL," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. "We'll find out for sure tomorrow."The 49ers (1-2) trailed 35-7 late in the first half before rallying behind Garoppolo, who threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns. Matt Breida added 90 yards rushing and Alfred Morris scored on the ground as San Francisco clawed to within 35-24 late in the third quarter. It was still 38-24 when the 49ers produced a grinding, 17-play drive that wiped out more than half the fourth quarter. But it ended in a strange sequence that began with Garoppolo taking the shot from Nelson along the sideline, rather than stepping out of bounds and avoiding the hit."I think that was his fault ," said Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston, who was trailing the play. "I pray he's not hurt, it's nothing serious, but as a quarterback you should step out of bounds. It's only an inch. An inch wouldn't have made a difference. You got the yardage. You need to be smart."C.J. Beathard came in on third-and-goal and threw what appeared to be a touchdown pass to George Kittle, but it was wiped out by offensive pass interference with 5:17 left in the game.Rather than go for it on fourth down at the Kansas City 25, Shanahan elected to kick a field goal — keeping it a two-possession game. Then the 49ers kicked it deep rather than try an onside kick, and the Chiefs picked up a first down by penalty before Hunt churned for two more and put the game away."That's our time in the game," Reid said. "You take a lot of pride in it. They're going backward and we're going forward and it's all good."MORE ON GAROPPOLOShanahan acknowledged a quarterback move is likely, though Beathard is line to start next week in Los Angeles. The 49ers' only other QB is Nick Mullins, a member of the practice squad. "I just talked to (Garoppolo) in the training room ," Beathard said. "I told him I'll be praying for him and I love him and he just told me to lead these guys."FOSTER'S FRUSTRATION49ers LB Reuben Foster had a rough return from a two-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct and substance abuse policy. Foster was hit with a personal foul for hitting Mahomes as the QB was sliding in the first half, Kelce beat him in pass defense, and the young linebacker left early in the fourth quarter when he was shaken up on a tackle.INJURIES49ers: The defensive backfield was in tatters by the fourth quarter. CB Richard Sherman left with a calf injury, FS Adrian Colbert hurt his ankle and backup CB Tarvarius Moore left with a wrist injury. SS Jaquiski Taylor was already inactive with a shoulder injury.Chiefs: LB Dee Ford left with a groin injury in the fourth quarter. He will have an MRI exam Monday ... Conley briefly left with a right ankle injury, though he returned to make his TD catch. ... SS Eric Berry (heel) remained inactive for the third straight week.UP NEXT49ers: Play the Chargers in Los Angeles next Sunday.Chiefs: Visit the AFC West-rival Broncos next Monday night.Mike McGlinchey expects to play Sunday vs. Cardinals The San Francisco 49ers offensive line took some hits this past week against the Los Angeles Chargers, but the unit appears to be making progress for Week 5 vs. the Arizona Cardinals. Left tackle Joe Staley, right tackle Mike McGlinchey, and center Weston Richburg all missed Wednesday’s practice, but McGlinchey and Richburg appear set to get some work in on Thursday.McGlinchey told the media before practice that the MRI on his knee came back clean, and he expects to play on Sunday. Richburg did not miss any snaps last week , but a knee injury had him banged up. The 49ers will release their official practice report in an hour or so, but it would appear both McGlinchey and Richburg will be listed as no worse than limited.Staley is the kind of guy who can get limited practice in and still be cleared for the game. My guess is he will get a DNP or limited designation on Thursday, and then a limited designation on Friday. If he is unable to play on Sunday, Garry Gilliam would start in his place.Richard Sherman is back at practice, but his status is up in the air. He was ruled out fairly quickly last week, and the expectation was that he would probably miss this week’s game. Sherman spoke to the media on Thursday before practice, and would not rule out being able to play. He said he would practice on Thursday and they would see how things develop from there. My guess is he doesn’t play on Sunday, but he is pushing for it.Marquise Goodwin did not practice on Wednesday as he was dealing with hamstring and quadricep issues. The team will already be without Dante Pettis on Sunday, so getting Goodwin back would be big for depth on the outside. We’ll have the full injury report later this afternoon or early evening.

San Francisco 49ers Hoodie , one more day and we get to see the 2019 version of C.J. Beathard. Two things going into this, because I’ve written at length about all of this madness (and I’m still not done); 1) Thank goodness it’s no longer his rookie season because even Peyton Manning had a subpar rookie season (56.7 completion percentage, 26 touchdowns, 28 interceptions) 2) As atrocious as last season was for him, at least he got some playing time. This year the first game jitters will have worn off and it won’t be near as overwhealming with the above going on. A while back I said Beathard got the best situation he could ask for, starting, then going to the bench as a backup. He got a taste of the NFL game which makes him a far better backup than someone who is green and coming into things when games matter. These games aren’t en route to a Super Bowl appearance, but at least Beathard can run the offense to Shanahan’s specifications. Some games this year are going to be bad, but they won’t be near as bad as think they can be thanks to Beathard’s experience. Let’s hope for improvement. The third round pick moved into the starting lineup with Reuben Foster’s suspension, and has become the leader of the middle of the defense with Malcolm Smith sidelined with a hamstring injury.Warner has received plenty of praise for his football intelligence, moving into the MIKE role in his debut. He handles the play-calls, receiving them from the defensive coaching staff and getting the defense in position. In Week 1, he handled that, while also leading the team in tackles and forcing a fumble. He was all over the field, reminiscent of the a couple of the 49ers recent franchise linebackers. It’s too early to say what his career will bring, but he could not have gotten off to a better start.Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, cornerback Richard Sherman, and general manager John Lynch all were asked about Warner’s performance. They praised his awareness. with Saleh and Sherman both praising Warner’s film study. Saleh said he regularly saw him buried in film outside of practice. Sherman said that while he did not regularly see him studying film like Saleh, the way he performed proved he was regularly staying on top of things.Saleh said there was room for improvement, with mistakes that the average fan would miss. Lynch thought Saleh was going a little overboard, but acknowledge there is always room for improvement.Warner will start once again on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, although this time Elijah Lee is expected to start next to him following Brock Coyle’s back injury. Expectations are only growing for Warner.Saleh on his performance: “I thought he had good command of the huddle, did a really good job relaying the message of the calls, did a great job getting people lined up. He made plays when they were presented to him. Saw the game very well. He did have mistakes , some that are not seen to the naked eye. So, he’s got a lot of stuff that he does have to clean up. Statistically, obviously, he produced and made a lot of plays. But, he’ll tell you himself that there’s a lot of room to get better.”Saleh on Warner film study: “I think that’s just who he is. That’s part of the whole evaluation process. He’s a film junky. That’s what he was coming out of BYU. You see him eating breakfast and watching tape. He’s sitting at a table by himself in the cafeteria and he’s got the tape rolling. He’s always deep in the film. If he continues to progress the way he is, he does have a bright future. But, like I said, consistency is the truest measure of performance. He’s got to consistently do it until he proves that that is who he is.”Sherman on his performance: “He did a good, he did a really good job. He was calm, he was poised. If you didn’t know he was a rookie, you’d have never guessed he was a rookie. He was deliberate, made a lot of great tackles. Obviously, the forced fumble was a huge play. But got his hands on multiple footballs, got a QB hit. He was all over the place.”Sherman on his film study: I don’t track him and see where he is at all times, but you can see it on the field. You can see that he’s always in the right spot, he recognizes plays really fast. He diagnoses things San Francisco 49ers T-Shirt , he gets to his spots. So those are things that you can see he really puts the work in and puts the time in. Anytime a rookie middle linebacker, that’s like, as they call it, the quarterback of the defense — come out there with a rookie, and you play well — he had to be incredibly prepared.Lynch: ”Fred Warner, shoot, that’s a really good rookie debut. I think Bob [Saleh] is splitting hairs when he says there’s a lot to work on. With every player there is 鈥?Fred had a really good debut. It really didn’t surprise a lot of us because he’s kind of been a guy who’s passed every test since he’s been here. He’s a really good player, and I think he showed he can do it on a big stage. Now you just improve upon that. I think there’s little subtleties, but one thing we know about Fred, he’s talented, and then he sees the game incredibly well. People call it instincts, knowing your assignment. But I think it’s a little bit beyond knowing your assignment. He just sees things.”

SNF The San Francisco 49ers lost Jimmy Garoppolo for the season nine days ago , and I imagine NFL executives were none too pleased about what it might mean for ratings. There was a report some in the league wanted the 49ers to trade for Nick Foles in hopes that would make them more competitive.C.J. Beathard offered a strong performance in Week 4, and the team seems to be in OK shape for the time being. But there is still the concern about getting flexed out of a primetime game. The 49ers’ schedule includes two Monday Night Football games, two Sunday Night Football games, and their one mandatory Thursday Night Football game. They cannot be flexed out of MNF or TNF, but they can be flexed out of SNF. The 49ers’ SNF schedule includes a Week 7 (October 21) home game with the Los Angeles Rams and a Week 13 (December 2) road game against the Seattle Seahawks. The NFL has until October 9 (a week from today) to decide whether or not to flex the 49ers Week 7 game against the Rams. The Bears-Patriots game is an option for flexing into SNF, while Bengals-Chiefs and Saints-Ravens could also depending on how those teams perform this weekend.C.J. Beathard looked solid on Sunday and the 49ers almost beat the Chargers. If they beat Arizona this weekend and don’t look bad in doing so, I think the NFL sticks with 49ers-Rams. After all, we saw a wildly entertaining 49ers-Rams TNF game last year, so maybe we see a solid follow-up.The bigger question is what to make of the 49ers-Seahawks SNF game in Week 13. It’s far too early to tell who might be out of the playoff picture that is currently in (and vice versa), but Vikings-Patriots could be a front-runner. Panthers-Bucs will depend on how Jameis Winston looks coming out of the bye, but if both teams are in contention, it might make sense. 49ers-Seahawks could hang onto the game, but there is a lot of lead time to change that. Quarterbacks are lighting it up at a record-setting pace this season with 228 touchdown throws in the first month of the season.Case Keenum hasn't joined the party. The Denver Broncos' new quarterback has just three touchdown passes — none since the opener against Seattle — and his six interceptions are just one shy of the total he had last season in Minnesota.Keenum is the first Broncos QB since John Elway in 1986 to go three consecutive games with 20 throws and zero touchdowns."Is it a concern? Not really," coach Vance Joseph said Wednesday. "Our concern is winning football games. ... But Case is going to get better and better with time. We're figuring out who we are as an offense. It's a month into the season, I've been proud of how Case is playing."If Keenum throws a touchdown pass Sunday when the Broncos (2-2) visit the Jets (1-3) Youth Mike Person Jersey , it'll be his first in 28 days."I don't care how we get into the end zone," Keenum said. "Obviously, I like throwing touchdowns. I like when those guys are running them in, too. We've got two great backs" in rookies Royce Freeman and Phillip Lindsay."They're doing a great job. But we've got a bunch of targets. Receivers, tight ends, they want to get into the end zone, too," Keenum said. "So, whatever it takes. I know the whole team is that way and whatever it takes to score more points than the other team, whether it's run or pass" is the goal. "But yeah, we'd love to get more passes going."Keenum would have had a fourth TD pass to go with his third fourth-quarter comeback for the Broncos had he connected with a wide-open Demaryius Thomas streaking down the sideline Monday night in the final seconds of Denver's 27-23 loss to the Chiefs in which they squandered a 10-point fourth-quarter lead.On third down from the Kansas City 28 with 22 seconds left, Keenum saw the cornerback jam Thomas, then release him to the safeties, both of whom were deep in the end zone.No linebacker to layer to throw over.No safeties to freeze with his eyes.No over-the-shoulder pinpoint pass needed.Just a basic delivery to his big receiver.Keenum stepped up and ... rifled it over Thomas' head .Keenum loved the play call by offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, who's taken some heat for using three-receiver sets without a fullback or tight end on a three-and-out series sandwiched between Patrick Mahomes ' two TD drives that rallied the unbeaten Chiefs."It was a great play call by Bill Youth Adrian Colbert Jersey , trying to take a shot at the end zone and they played two high safeties," Keenum said. "I threw it where I wanted to, just a little high. It was just a little bit off. And that's the game. It's a game of inches. Would I have liked to have that one back? Heck yeah. But I know we're going to make a lot more of those than we don't."So, I gave it my best shot and I can't lose anymore sleep over it," Keenum said. "We've got a lot more games to play. We've got a tough test this week. So, I've squashed it. I've learned from it. I've moved on."Being in all four games with a chance to pull out the win gives Keenum hope he can find his rhythm like he did in leading the Vikings to the NFC championship game last season."We haven't played our best football yet and we've had a chance to win every game," Keenum said. "... I'm excited where we're at. I'm even more excited where we're headed."MARSHALL's MOVEMENTThe Broncos and Brandon Marshall announced a $50,000 commitment to help launch the linebacker's FEEL (Feed and Educate to Empower Leaders) Movement in Denver. The initiative was announced 48 hours after Marshall and Thomas both stood with their teammates during "The Star-Spangled Banner" Monday night after staying inside during the national anthem for the first three games.Marshall, who followed the lead of his college teammate Colin Kaepernick in taking a knee during the national anthem in the past, said he and Thomas felt that they had made their point by continuing to draw attention to social injustice."The protest is just a symbol. The knee is just a symbol. It's not everything. The action, what we do in the community, that's everything," Marshall said. "I definitely think the knee was important to get everybody's attention, but more-so it's about what everyone's doing in the community."

embarrassing loss Another week and the New York Giants have managed to let another winnable game slip through their fingers. The Giants are once again in the basement of the NFC East after dropping a divisional game to the Dallas Cowboys. The good news is that they are only a game behind the rest of the division Youth Kerry Wynn Jersey , but the bad news is that the way they lost looked entirely too familiar. The team might have shown some promise in their Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. At first blush, that promise evaporated in the week since, but let’s take a look at some of the deeper stats and see what we can learn.Offense The Giants dominated the time of possession on offense, outsnapping the Cowboys offense 68 to 53. However, that overwhelming advantage in plays run didn’t translate into much, as most of the Giants’ offensive efforts were an exercise in futility. Eli Manning had an efficient night, completing 33-of-44 attempts (75 percent) and scoring a touchdown. However, a closer look at his passing chart shows just how conservative the Giants’ offense was. Manning was nearly perfect on passes inside of ten yards, completing 17 of 18 attempts, a number which ballooned to 28 of 31 when we include passes behind the line of scrimmage. But while the West Coast ethos of “you don’t go broke making a profit” rings true in general, the Giants only rarely seemed to threaten the Cowboys deep. Shurmur’s offense is designed to use vertical elements to clear out coverage underneath, and Manning has always thrived when the has the option to attack a defense deep. The Giants’ game-plan appeared to have neither, and was far too easily boxed in by Dallas’ base defense of man coverage under a Cover 2 shell. This defensive scheme is nothing new for the Giants as they faced it consistently since 2016, and was exactly the reason why Jerry Reese drafted Evan Engram. The hybrid tight end played 60 snaps (88 percent), and his ability against 2-Man coverage was on display against Dallas, when he was used. Engram finished a perfect 7 receptions on 7 targets for 67 yards and a touchdown Sunday night, averaging an absurd 6.64 yards of separation per Next Gen Stats. However, of those 7 receptions, only one was run more than 5 yards down the field, his touchdown. It is also important to note that four of Engram’s receptions came after the Giants had fallen behind 20-3.Saquon Barkley, who played 58 snaps (85 percent) was the Giants’ most prolific receiver, catching 14 of 16 targets (not typos) for 80 yards. But he, too, rarely went down the field, catching 9 of his 14 receptions behind the line of scrimmage. Barkley also carried the ball 11 times, gaining just 28 yards. The Giants did send Odell Beckham Jr. — who played 66 of 68 snaps — down the field, having him run more than 10 yards on 6 of his 9 targets. Unfortunately, he only caught 4 of those 9 targets for 51 yards.Beyond those players, there was a sharp delineation in the players who were in the Giants’ gameplan and those who weren’t. Other than the starting offensive line Curtis Riley Jersey , only six Giants played more than 65 percent of the Giants’ snaps, Eli Manning, Odell Beckham Sterling Shepard, Cody Latimer, Evan Engram, and Saquon Barkley. Rhett Ellison only played 24 snaps, Wayne Gallman and Jonathan Stewart each played 5 snaps, WR Russell Shepard played six snaps, FB Shane Smith played 4 snaps, and TE Scott Simonson played three snaps. For an offense that promised to use — if not feature — aggression down the field and a robust personnel rotation based in a 12-personnel alignment, the Giants’ offense against the Dallas Cowboys resembled nothing so much as the Giants under Ben McAdoo, and performed similarly. DefenseThe Giants’ defense only played 53 snaps, giving up just 20 points for the second week in a row. The defense was lead by Landon Collins, Janoris Jenkins, and Alec Ogletree who each played all of the defensive snaps. They each also notched six total tackles. The defensive line was lead by Dalvin Tomlinson, who played 39 snaps, and Damon Harrison who played 34. Rounding out the front seven were EDGE players Kareem Martin, who played 47 snaps, and Connor Barwin, who played 36 snaps. The Giants mounted no effective pass rush, and Tomlinson was the team’s most effective rusher, and was the only one to approach the league’s average distance from the QB across all his pass rush snaps. Third round rookies B.J. Hill and Lorenzo Carter only played 22 and 21 snaps, respectively. Given the ineffectiveness of the Giants’ pass rush, James Bettcher will want to incorporate the athletic rookies more in future games. Eli Apple played 33 snaps before leaving the game with a groin injury. That could prove to be a costly injury going forward, as Apple was having a bounce-back season and has been excellent in coverage through the first two games. He was replaced by B.W. Webb, who played a total of 41 snaps, and Donte Deayon who played 13 snaps in the slot, notching a pass defensed in that time. The team appeared to spend most of their time in a heavy nickel package, with four down linemen and linebackers B.J. Goodson and Ray-Ray Armstrong splitting time next to Ogletree. Goodson played 30 snaps while Armstrong played the remaining 23. The Giants’ defense got off to a rough start Nate Solder Jersey , giving up 10 points in Dallas’ first two drives. However, for the second week in a row they settled down and managed to do enough for the team to win. The lack of a pass rush will be a problem going forward, and the Giants need to figure out a solution independent of Olivier Vernon. The injured EDGE player might not be back for next week’s match-up against the Houston Texans, and having only one viable pass rusher is not a tenable situation. Neither Martin, Wynn, nor Barwin have the speed to scare offenses. Perhaps the team will need to actively look to incorporate Carter and find situations for him to unleash his athleticism. The team showed some promising things in the first week of the season, but rather than building on them, managed to regress in nearly all areas in Week 2. The New York Giants lost on Monday night to the Atlanta Falcons, 23-20, are once again 1-6, and are closing in on having the first overall pick in the NFL Draft. There was plenty we already knew about the 2018 Giants that was confirmed in this mess of a Monday night game:The third iteration of the rebuilt offenisve line is bad. The Giants have all the firepower they can ask for in Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard, and Saquon Barkley. They are also utterly incapable of consistently putting it to use. The Giants’ defense is flawed, but tries hard and shouldn’t be blamed for their losing record. However, there were some things that we learned.Eli can still throw down the fieldThe Giants signaled that they were going to be aggressive with their receivers when the first pass of the game was a 10-yard play to Beckham. The Giants were cautious in their use of Saquon Barkley, but finally showed a willingness to challenge a poor secondary with Beckham and Sterling Shepard. Manning completed 71 percent of his passes, finishing with 399 yards passing and a yards per attempt of 10.5, his highest of the season. While the Giants did get good runs after the catch from both Beckham and Shepard, Manning also looked down the field far more than he had against the Eagles. Eli’s game was far from perfect, but it was nice to see him threaten a defense down the field, even in the face of pressure — Something the Giants largely have not done this season. We won’t know whether or not the Giants can sustain I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Eli Manning just looks like a different quarterback when he has the option to attack a defense, rather than just take what it gives him.The Giants can’t play in the red zoneFor all the Giants’ offensive firepower, it shouldn’t really surprise that they are utterly inept in the red zone. The short field that comes with play in the red zone has a bunch of effects on the game. Everything is sped up because offenses simply can’t stretch defenses out they way can between the 20s. Secondaries don’t have to cover as much space, receivers don’t have as much space in which to work, and passing windows are smaller. The red zone is the area of the field in which all the little problems elsewhere on the field rear their heads at once, and the Giants have plenty of them. Slight miscommunications are magnified and being just off-target becomes wildly inaccurate. And small lapses in blocking can become drive-killing mistakes. The Giants routinely do all of these on offense, and it shows in Red Zone play which is just bad. It isn’t as simple as just having a big receiver — Both Sterling Shepard and Odell Beckham are capable of playing far larger than they measure thanks to their quickness and 40-inch vertical leaps. Evan Engram was a premier red zone threat in 2017, but he isn’t used in the same way in this offense. The Giants’ offensive line can’t hold up or create any kind of room for Barkley to run the ball. Poor play calls and miscommunications waste opportunities. The Giants have a lot of little (and some very big) problems which compound and magnify each other Authentic Sterling Shepard Jersey , and need to be solved individually before they will have consistent success in the Red Zone. The pass rush might have some lifeThe Giants came in to Monday night with the worst pass rush in the NFL. Granted it was against an offensive line that has done about as good a job of In Olivier Vernon’s second game back, the Giants’ pass rush finally started to show some life. With Olivier Vernon giving the Falcons’ offensive line a legitimate pass rush threat to worry about, the Giants’ other rushers began to find some success, with Kerry Wynn, Lorenzo Carter, Mario Edwards (negated by a defensive holding penalty), all getting to Ryan. James Bettcher also mixed in plenty of schemed pressure with some aggressive blitz calls, which forced Matt Ryan to speed up his process. For the third time this season the Giants’ defense did enough for the team to win. They held an offense which had averaged nearly 30 points a game to 23, and gave the offense opportunity after opportunity to win the game. And once again, the Giants’ offense failed to capitalize. It remains to be seen if the Giants can repeat the defensive feat against the Washington Redskins’ talented offensive line, but for now it was good to see.Pat Shurmur’s bad decisions continueGiants’ head coach Pat Shurmur has made curious, or downright bad, decisions throughout the season. There was consternation regarding Shurmur’s decision to go for 2 points on the team’s first touchdown. That call made sense from a math perspective — best case, the next score would be for the win, worst case it was still a one score game. The move also signaled to his team that he IS trying to win the game, something that his offensive scheme hasn’t always indicated. THAT decision wound up being moot, as the team scored another touchdown and completed a second 2-point conversion attempt. MUCH more egregious, Shurmur called a pair of quarterback sneaks in the final minute with the Giants out of time outs and desperately trying to mount a comeback. Manning took advantage of a bad Falcons offense to get the Giants in scoring position in a flash. But with no timeouts remaining, the Giants had to score, and quickly. Failing that, they needed to get the clock stopped. Instead, the Giants ran a pair of quarterback sneaks with an offensive line that had been utterly dominated all game long. This is on top of the schematic decision to not use Saquon Barkley as a downfield passing threat. Barkley was targeted plenty, 10 times, catching 9. But on those targets, he only got 51 yards, with a long of 14. Shurmur flatly refused to send Barkley down the field in a game where Sterling Shepard had 167 receiving yards and Odell Beckham 143 and a touchdown.
